Literary Blog Hop, 27 October – 31 October

Welcome to another Literary Blog Hop by the voracious reader Leeswammes who has hosted this giveaway for the past two years. There are around 50 blogs which have signed up to this and they are all giving away something book related. All their links are at the bottom of this post and anyone can visit and enter – just mind the blog’s own restrictions as some don’t post worldwide.

I am giving away a book of your choice up to the value of £10 from the Book Depository. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post and you will be entered. Since it’s so close to Halloween / Samhain feel free to leave a scary book suggestion in the comments, just for fun. This won’t affect the giveaway.

The winner needs to respond to my email within three days or I will choose someone else. That’s it! Have fun discovering new blogs.

  1. Thank you for the giveaway! I don’t really read scary novels, but there is one I bumped into, “Transgressions”, by Sarah Dunant. It is totally different from her historical novels, and what a scary night that was, while I was reading it 🙂

  2. Fantastic giveaway, thank you. I’m really easily scared (particularly on windy, rainy nights). I thought Villain by Shuichi Yoshida was quite eerie in places!

  3. Scary? How about hauntingly good? I just read “Hereafter” by Tara Hundson this week and if you like YA and ghosts, I say give it a go!

  4. Thanks for joining the blog hop … again!

A scary book, hmm, have you read The Radleys by Matt Haig yet? It’s not actually very scary but a great read for Halloween. And it takes place about 5 miles from where I used to live. OK, that’s more interesting for me than you, but even so!

  5. Scary – hmm… I don’t really find books scary. That’s more for films (especially when your Dad comes home unexpectedly in the middle of a horror film…).

Anyway, I’d love the prize – thank you 🙂

  6. Thank you for the giveaway and for making it open to all. Much appreciated.

  7. Ah, I would really like to enter. 😀 I love The Book Depository!

  8. Thanks for the giveaway. I read We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and it is a perfect halloween book! So deliciously creepy and amazingly written.

  9. Please enter me 🙂

    I don’t really read scary stories… so I can’t help you there 😉

  10. Thank you for the international giveaway!
A scary book suggestion.. em.. The Restorer by Amanda Stevens comes to my mind.

  11. I’d recommend practically all of Stephen King’s books. Scary indeed.

  12. I’d love to be entered please 🙂

As for spooky reads.. I am not very good with them usually. However, I have just read some fantastic ones for RIP. The last one I finished was The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, which is a children’s book but very entertaining.

  13. Hello and thank you for this giveaway. Scary books… Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is a very classical one but so good !

  14. I’d love to be entered, thank you! Hmmm, a scary book recommendation… I’m pretty easily spooked so I don’t read many (not before bed, anyway!), but I highly recommend ‘Long Lankin’ by Lindsey Barraclough. It’s actually a YA novel, but it’s set in a fifties village and is a beautifully written chiller based on an old ballad and the legend of Long Lankin. It was one of my favourite reads last year!

  15. Ohh, far too many people right now are talking about the dearest Edgar Allan Poe…. whom I have never ever read. It’s Halloween time after all.

  16. I would love to be entered, thanks for offering this giveaway.
As for a scary book, I generally don’t read them! Though I am reading Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry right now….zombies are scary!

  17. Count me in! 🙂 I’m really enjoying visiting all the other blogs on the hop–it’s a great way to find new people to read. Thanks for the giveaway.

P.S. Neil Gaiman has a new short story that’s a free download on Audible and that is especially for Halloween. To be read/listened to with the lights off! (Boo.)

  18. What an awesome prize! as for scary books, how about The Woman in Black by Susan Hill or The Passage by Justin Cronin.

  19. Thanks for the chance to win 😉 Yay for giveaways!

A scary book recommendation…I don’t read too many scary things so how about a scary movie instead? The Exorcist..oooh 😉 That one always terrifies me!

  20. Thanks for the giveaway!! I haven’t read any scary books, so I have no suggestions.

    1. Julia R you have won the giveaway but I don’t have a contact for you. Please reply – thanks! And congratulations 🙂

  21. The best scary story I have ever read is The Shining. Thanks for the giveaway!

  22. Oh, please count me in! I don’t read scary books, so I don’t have any good suggestions in that genre, the daily news is scary enough for me!

  23. Thanks for the giveaway. One of the scariest books I’ve ever read is The inhuman condition, by Clive Barker, and I am planning to reread The shining, by Stephen King, this month, and I suggest that and also Pet Sematary, of the same author =]
I’d love to win this giveawy xD
    Cya!
    Good readings!

  24. I don’t read too many scary books, but Stephen King is always good for a creepy read 🙂

  25. Great giveaway, not a scary book, but
    My Little Fools

    Have you? —
    Have you ever been scared?
I ask you again, my poor little friends
    have you ever been scared?

Hiding – buried deep in the cupboard
where the hot water-pipe rattles your soul
hearing a foot on the stairs
    feeling those worries and cares
Knowing, you, are their only goal! or
now running down a dark lane
the screams and the shouts just behind
you stumble fall, graze your hand on the wall
knowing there is nowhere else left to hide
Your hearts beating faster and faster
you think it’s about to explode
but there is no relief in this tension
as you feel this anxiety grow.

    Have you? —
    Have you, ever been paranoid?
I ask you again, my poor little friends
    have you ever been paranoid?

Don’t! hide in the deepest of corners.
Don’t wrap yourself up in the gloom.
Don’t wait for the knife, on
    some drear weary night, or
you’ll find yourself deep in some tomb.
Then, you may think your troubles over
well, friends you can’t know me that well
because I’ll raise all the ghouls
    and those sleep-sodden fools
to make sure they stir up your hell.

    Oh paranoids, paranoids! show
me all your little toys, hide
from me all you little boys
    ————————-and girls.

    Have you? —
    Have you, ever killed someone?
    Laid, down, their bleeding corpse.
I ask you again, my poor little friends
    have you, ever killed someone?

Seen the knife, flash bright in the moonlight
heard the pistol, bark and sigh
    seen the terror and fright,
    felt the thrill and delight
as you realise it’s not you who’s to die.
Then you read all your deeds in the paper
the infamous things you have tried
gun in hand, knife in your waistband.
You know it’s you who will fry! But
you’ll wait for your moment of glory
a shootout you’ll face one dark night
with the forces of law, to even the score
as they judicially finish your life.

    So, now, my little paranoids
    scared killers all!
    You’ll meet me some day
    in some infinite way
    and realise you were my
    little fools!
    G.M.

    1. Ah Parrish, always a treat to have one of your comments. What a double treat today!

  26. Thank you for hosting this giveaway! I’m rubbish when it comes to scary books, sorry. But to list a book somewhere on this comment, I’d most likely choose The Song of Achilles as my book of choice if I win.
    Cheers!

  27. Hi great giveaway – I don’t read many scary books – but in the spirit of Haloween I am about to start reading The penguin book of ghost stories -which include chillers by people like Elizabeth Gaskell, M R James and many others – really looking forward to it.

  28. Thank you for this INTL giveaway. I’ve heard positive things about
The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories by Jeff VanderMeer. It has been on my wishlist for so long.

  29. Thanks for the giveaway! I don’t really read spooky books as I get too easily scared! Sorry not to give a recommendation! Nice to find your blog.

    Katie

    spamscape [at] gmail [dot] com

  39. Thanks for the giveaway, count me in!
I don’t read many scary books lately, but I think Poe’s short stories would be perfect for Halloween’s reading.. 😉

    biochemguy22(at)yahoo(dot)com

  51. How happy that I found your Blog! The pictures are so cute that you just posted. As for scary stories, I have read Stephen King, Early V.C. Andrews and so many past and current Authors. The one(sort of a crime/horror) that stayed with me long after I finished the last page; was “The Room”. I appreciate your giveaway as I love to read. I hope to stay tuned for more of your insightful posts.
Now, to dream of what book I would choose if I am a winner???

  52. Thanks for the giveaway! I don’t read a lot of scary books but a scary book that wouldn’t be considered horror that I read this year would be Gone Girl. It’s more creepy and scary because it highlights some of the worst aspects of human behavior. It definitely gave me some weird dreams!

  56. Thanks for the giveaway, please enter me!

The scariest thing I’ve ever read was actually a children’s book titled Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, and it had a story about a girl how always had a ribbon on her neck. Sent shivers up my spine as a kid…to the point I hid the book.

    Lilian @ A Novel Toybox

  57. I do not tend to read a lot of horror books, I tend to go for psychological or suspense rather than outright horror, but Val McDermid’s “The Wire in the Blood” was quite gory and horrific though it is classified as a mystery novel.

  58. I’m in! Scary stories that I love are those from Edgar Allan Poe, like The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Mask of the Red Death.
    Thanks for the giveaway!
